Reptiles require specific wavelengths of Ultraviolet-B (UVB) light to synthesize Vitamin D3, which allows their bodies to absorb dietary calcium. Without adequate UVB, reptiles can develop life-threatening Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).

The danger with artificial UVB lighting is that the visible light outlasts the ultraviolet output. The phosphors coating the inside of fluorescent tubes (like T5 and T8 bulbs) degrade rapidly when exposed to the electrical arc that powers them. To the human eye, a 14-month-old T5 bulb looks perfectly bright and functional. To a reptile, that same bulb is effectively pitch black regarding UV radiation.

Why do UVB bulbs need to be replaced if they still produce light?

The visible light in a fluorescent or mercury vapor bulb lasts much longer than the ultraviolet output. The internal phosphors that generate the specific UVB wavelengths degrade continuously through use. After 6 to 12 months, the bulb may look perfectly bright to the human eye, but it is outputting virtually zero usable UVB for your reptile.

How do I determine a custom bulb lifespan?
