Why Growth Velocity Matters
Most keepers rely on an animal's absolute weight to judge its health and development. However, genetic differences, incubation conditions, and hatch weights can vary significantly between individuals, making direct weight comparisons unreliable. A 150-gram ball python may be thriving, while another at the same weight could be underperforming.
Growth Velocity provides a far more meaningful measure by tracking how much body mass an animal gains over a specific period of time. By calculating the change in weight divided by the number of days between measurements, it produces a precise growth rate that reflects the effectiveness of your husbandry, feeding regimen, and overall care. Rather than asking, "How much does my animal weigh?" Growth Velocity answers the more important question: "How well is my animal growing?"
The Math Behind the Calculation
While the formula might look fancy, it is just a simple rate-of-change calculation. $W_1$ and $W_2$ represent your previous and current weights in grams, and the bottom of the fraction, $d_2 - d_1$ is simply the total number of days that have passed between those two weigh-ins.
For example, if a Juvenile Leopard Gecko weighed 15 grams on May 1st ($W_1$), and 24 grams on May 31st ($W_2$), the calculation is exactly 24 minus 15, divided by the 30 days that passed. This yields a growth velocity of 0.30 grams per day, which indicates optimal, healthy development.
Reading Your Results
- Weight Loss Detected: A negative velocity means the animal is burning more calories than it is taking in, or is dehydrated. Excluding females post-ovulation or post-defecation, unexplained weight loss is a clinical sign that warrants parasite screening.
- Below Average: Consistent sluggish growth indicates either underfeeding, inappropriately cool basking temperatures (halting digestion), or high stress levels.
- Optimal Range: The animal's metabolic rate is perfectly aligned with its caloric intake. Keep doing exactly what you are doing.
- Above Average (Power Feeding): Growing too fast is dangerous. "Power feeding" to reach breeding weight quickly strains internal organs and drastically shortens lifespan, particularly in snakes and large lizards.
